Dr. Gregory J. McCormick to Serve as the 2019 Lyndon Institute Commencement Speaker

Lyndon Institute Head of School, Twiladawn Perry, is pleased to announce that Dr. Gregory J. McCormick, an alumnus and Valedictorian from the Class of 1991, will serve as the Commencement speaker for the Class of 2019. 

Dr. McCormick is an ophthalmologist and President of Ophthalmic Consultants of Vermont and Vermont Laser Vision at Timber Lane in South Burlington. He has performed over 10,000 eye surgeries, including cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, and LASIK surgery. He also has engaged in research in numerous multicenter clinical trials and has served as a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Ethics Committee. He currently serves as a member of the Lyndon Institute Board of Trustees. 

"I'm honored and looking forward to coming back to my roots at Lyndon Institute to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class of 2019,” said McCormick. 

McCormick graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in chemistry and was the Head Teaching Fellow for the organic chemistry laboratory. At Harvard, he was selected by the American Chemical Society for superior undergraduate research for the New England region. He was the first place winner in the James Bryan Conant scientific writing competition for Harvard undergraduate students. He was awarded the Derek Bok Center Certificate of Distinction for excellence of work with students and strength of commitment to teaching in the Department of Organic Chemistry at Harvard and was the captain and four-year member of the varsity ski team. 

In 1996, he returned to the Northeast Kingdom as the chemistry and physics teacher at Burke Mountain Academy, being mentored by Dr. Tim Simpson, his high school chemistry teacher. He went on to attend the University of Vermont College of Medicine and received subspecialty training at the University of Rochester Eye Institute and named a Cornea and Refractive Surgery Fellow, serving with distinction. 

While a student at Lyndon Institute, McCormick was the captain of the cross country team, cross country ski team, and track team earning top-10 finishes in all three sports in the Vermont state meets. He took first place at the Vermont State Chemistry Olympiad, was selected to represent Vermont at the Hugh O’Brian International Leadership Seminar (HOBY), received a US Army National Scholar/Athlete Award and a sponsorship from the Rossignol Ski Company. 

He is a board certified surgeon by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the Vermont State Ophthalmologic Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. 

McCormick lives in Hinesburg with his wife Monica and his three daughters, Fiona, Mattea, and Celia.

His ongoing dedication and leadership as a member of the Board of Trustees has been influential in helping us provide the best opportunities for our students. We are excited to hear him speak to our students about the endless possibilities for their future.” 

Commencement for Lyndon Institute will take place on June 2nd at 11 a.m. at the Robert K. Lewis Field in Lyndon Center, VT.
